Renovating On a Budget

Now that it’s officially spring and the snow is slowly melting (very slowly) it’s time to add some life back into our interiors as well! Before revamping your home there are some important things to consider, especially if you’re on a budget.

Say ‘YES’ To Updating Your Kitchen

Redoing your entire kitchen can be a costly renovation project and not an easy task. There are little things that can be done however to give your kitchen the facelift it needs to get you through through those next few years for when you’re ready to tackle the entire space. Instead of replacing all of your outdated oak cabinets, you can have them painted a warm and inviting colour, just in time for the new season. You can also change out all of the cabinet hardware to something more current and fashionable. If replacing your cabinets, opt for IKEA cabinets instead of ordering custom. A new countertop and a simple backsplash can also go a really long way to freshening up your kitchen without breaking the bank.

Combine Projects When Possible

When you’re on a budget it can be a good idea to break-up your renovation into different phases so you’re not having to pay for everything all at one. It can however be more efficient and cost effective to do certain projects at once, such as replacing your flooring.

Focus On the Areas That Will Give You the Most Value

If you’re unable to do a full-house renovation, focus on the areas that will give you the most return when it comes time to selling your home. Updating your kitchen and bathrooms are not only the most used areas in the home, but will give you the most value.

Update Old Doors

Doors can often reveal the age of your home. A fresh coat of paint can work wonders, but if your doors are showing lots of wear then it would be a good time to invest in some new ones with a more modern profile. Make sure to update the door hinges and door levers as well; you’ll be amazed at what a difference it will make! Don’t forget your front door either. A new front door will really add to your curb appeal – if you’re feeling bold why not look at painting it a fun colour? Chartreuse anyone?

Update Dated Plumbing Fixtures

Another simple way to modernize your home is to replace all of your existing sinks, faucets, shower heads and toilets. Have some fun with it – think of your plumbing fixtures as the jewelry of your home! Not only will you add some style, but your home will be more energy efficient as well.

 Fresh Coat of Paint

To get the most ‘wow’ for the least amount of money, look at giving all of your walls a fresh coat of paint. If you’re planning on selling your home, keep the colours soft and neutral. You want your home to appeal to a broad range of people.

You Get What You Pay For

Nothing is more costly than having to replace a product early. Just because the initial costs are less, you could end up spending more in the long run if it doesn’t last. Use quality materials when possible.
